Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was formed on the 19th of September 1983, which was then named as Asian Cricket Conference. The aims and the objectives of the Conference were to organize, promote and develop the game of Cricket in Asia. Six Countries were then the Full Members of the Conference and they are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore. In 1995, the name of the organization was changed to Asian Cricket Council and a few amendments were made to further enhance the activities for the betterment of the game in Asia.
The office bearers of the council are rotated every two years between the member countries capable of fulfilling the responsibilities. The headquarters of ACC rotated with the President and Secretary. In 2003, after having muted the idea for a few years of having a permanent Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur was chosen as the permanent HQ of the Asian Cricket Council. This was to ensure the organization could be run in a more effective and efficient way in this current world of sports and having a permanent base.
Today, ACC has a total of 20 members’ countries and cricket has been introduced to all parts of Asia. The present membership consists of nine full members and eleven Associate members. The Full Members are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore and Nepal while the Associate countries are Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bhutan, Brunei, Iran, Kuwait, Maldives, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. ACC is trying to get other Asian countries to become its member. Hopefully China should join ACC soon. Cricket has been introduced to these countries under the ICC Regional Development Program where Asia has been given 50% of the ICC funds to develop the game in this part of the world. Under the ACC Development Program, a Development Manager, three Development Officer and one Sports Medicine Consultant has been appointed to conduct programs in these countries. Various programs such as the coaching programs, umpiring courses, curator’s courses and sports medicine courses is being conducted by the expertise to improve the game in the member countries. ACC also has active cooperation agreements with Cricket Australia and The New Zealand Sports Turf Institute.
Asian Cricket Council apart from the ACC Development Program is self funded by the sponsorship deals and the television rights that are given during the ACC tournaments like the Asia Cup, Asian Test Championship, ACC Trophy and Asian Cricket Junior Tournaments.
